A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a gold tigers head in front view superimposed upon a maroon Maltese cross.
The tigers head is a reference to the Columbia Tigers, a home guard unit originated during the Civil War in the Columbia, Missouri area, site of the unit. The name was later changed to Missouri Tigers and in time became associated with the University of Missouri, which is the sponsor of the unit. The Maltese cross was a symbol of the Knights Hospitallers, an ancient order dedicated to caring for the sick and, as such, represents the military as well as medicine.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 5503d U.S. Army Reserve Hospital on 31 October 1969. It was redesignated for the 7227th Medical Support Unit on 21 September 2001.
